“ The Creation of the German Fleet ”

Gustav Schönleber, Gefion

The Danish frigate Gefion was taken – together with the ship-of-the-line Christian VIII which exploded after capitulation – in the battle of April 5, 1849 between the Danes and the beach batteries of Eckernförde manned by Prussians and Nassauians and the other year incorporated as SMS Eckernförde first into the fleet of the German Confederation, after its dissolution two years later under her original name again into the Prussian fleet. From 1870 she then served in Kiel as house ship as represented here, too. Her figure-head today in city hall of Eckernförde, her anchor in the park there. – “(T)hat fight … belongs to the finest … We already mentioned before that actually from this victory the creation of the German fleet dates.” – On both sides continuous text on the course of the battle.
