Koning, Dirk (Groot-Schermer 1888 – Blaricum 1978). With Full Sails. Onemasted vessel with large gaff and spinnaker before the wind from front. Woodcut. C. 1920. Inscribed: in the stock with the ligated monogram DK, autographed in ink: DKoning / (Hand impression / Palm wood) & verso in pencil: Met volle zeilen. 2⅝ × 2¾ in (6.8 × 7 cm).
Vollmer III, 94; van Waay 66. – Proof before the hatching at the left sides of the two sails, too, and before the hatching of the two clouds (see comparative ills. below). – On wide-margined Japan hand-made paper. – Koning was pupil of Jaap Weyand, later furthered by Fauconnier & Piet van Wijngaerdt. Active as figure, flower, and landscape painter, in the ’50s i. a. in Altkloster near Buxtehude, and married with the painter and etcher Louise Marie Louber.

– – – The same in final state with the additional little lines mentioned above as optically more charming, for the rest only with the signature “DKoning” and the inscription on the back. – Under greyish brown marbled thin artist’s passepartout, mounted on that by the upper and lower edge of the paper. – Contrary to the sheet above less wide-margined: above 2 cm, the sides 1.5 cm, below 3.5 cm.
