niemeyer’s AHA! events – by tradition current

Even though it is readily and often deliberately ignored: art always is topical. And quite frequently more topical – and foremost more striking – than some of today’s contemporaries not least in politics & economy may like. But no matter whether Hogarth or Ridinger, Landseer or Daumier – to name but a few from five centuries – now comment on current events or jubilees and other festivities and occasions are to be honored, it’s always: every month new – every month something else.

Alexander the Great’s Starting 2350 Years ago (Spring 334 BC)

The Alexander Campaign as the “Greatest Campaign of Conquest of all Times” in literature, drawings and prints. Starting with Curtius Rufus as the source to Le Brun’s gigantic Triumphs of Alexander in the grandiose prints by Girard Audran and Gerard Edelinck and further highlights in drawings by François Verdier on blue paper all the way to the change of his portrait in the 18^th Century.

Andrea Bartelucci

Italian jazz flutist and composer. After studying classic flute and chamber music and performing as solo flutist in Europe and America towards the end of the 1970s he started playing jazz, i. a. with several associates of Charles Mingus. Small wonder he has an open mind for developing into new directions, including modern jazz, fusion, and progressive rock. Frequently appearing in Russia since the Iron Curtain came down, he has his own BART quartet based in Saint Petersburg, with which he also produced the Live CD Flirty Gerty at the JFC Club there (Nikitin Records ТФН-CD 530/08, NIKITIN Record Company, Moscow).

Ridinger Experiences. Life Work Posthumous Fame 1698-2020

The master triumphant in his abundance through the centuries and his friends in greeting. The great reading, fact, and picture book on “one of the few German Baroque artists who since his demise 220 years ago never fell into oblivion” (Rolf Biedermann, Meisterzeichnungen des Deutschen Barock, 1987, p. 338). – “At long last an illustrated publication on the work of Ridinger!” (Wolfgang Steiner) and a “… colossal work. Franz Heckendorf

“One of the most talented exponents of the young German generation of artists, whose personal style so far found its most mature expression in his landscapes filled by enormous dynamics of pictorial rendering and carried by strong inwardness of perception” Hans Vollmer wrote 1923 about then 35-year-old Franz Heckendorf. Like Heckel and E. L. Kirchner, with whom he shares his essentially autodidact maturing, ostracized as degenerate, it was not granted to him to emerge like phoenix from the ashes as those did. So his redemption is long in coming yet. However, it is a sheer fascination how this œuvre spans beginning and late period without a break.

William Hogarth

Engravings and etchings by and after William Hogarth. Besides the works by Hogarth himself and the engravers employed by him resp. engravings by Thomas Cook in both the large – and only equal-sized with Hogarth – and small edition, furthermore by i. a. Rahl and Riepenhausen. With numerous illustrations.

Hunters of the Wanted Prints

His pictures about everyone knows, his name not: Johann Elias Ridinger. He was the master of the hunt engraving and celebrates the 310^th birthday this year. The antiquarians Lüder and Jan Niemeyer have specialized in the Baroque engraver’s lifework. (German)
