Kessel – Davies, Alice I. Jan van Kessel (1641-1680). 1993. 4to. VIII, 335 pp. text. With 411 (11 color) plate illustrations. Orig. cloth.

AETAS AUREA X. – Monograph & CATALOG RAISONNÉ of the paintings & drawings of this little known talented successor of Jacob van Ruisdael, not to be mistaken for the contemporary Antwerp master of the same name. However, he was also inspired by Meindert Hobbema’s village scenes, watermills & woods, Allart van Everdingen’s watermills, Jan Wijnant’s wooded landscapes or Jan van de Cappelle’s winter sceneries, to whom then a great part of his œuvre was attributed previously, frequently with the authentic signature covered by one of such greater names.

The 290 fully illustrated works cataloged as follows: paintings = 120 authentic, 19 problematic, 44 dubious ones. Drawings = 68 authentic, 13 problematic, 26 dubious ones.
