Bol, Laurens J. Die holländische Marinemalerei des 17. Jahrhunderts. From the Dutch manuscript in German by Hildegard Aarsen-Hürthle. Brunswick, Klinkhardt & Biermann, 1973. 4to. XII, 347 pp. With 327 (several colored) partly half full-page ills. Blue orig. cloth with gilt title on back and front cover and orig. dust jacket with mounted color ills. (slightly age-marked).
The splendid standard work on Dutch marine painting of the 17th century, out of print already since the late 80s and adequately sought, was published 62 years after the equally German-language pioneer work by Fred C. Willis. In the meantime only the one by admiral Sir Lionel Preston from 1937, dealing with the subject rather under the technical aspect. Special attention is paid to “the earliest, formerly dealt with far too sparsely” painters, for “Not those who are famous need intercession, but those who were narrowed and forgotten undeservedly”. At the same time a picture book of degree. – Stamp on fly-leaf. – Binding loosed, front joint reinforced, inner book slightly bumped at the lower right corner.
